Week 28 Wrap Up 2024

Definitely loving this time of year, the weekends are just full of bowls and Pennant has to be one of my personal favourites for the year. We got off to a triumphant start in Round 1 for Pennant, Round 2 wasn’t as successful but there was definitely a major highlight for the Division 7 team.

There was some Handicap Pairs thrown into the mix on the Sunday with some really strong teams taking to the green. There was a particular game of interest that played out – we will visit that later on!

We are dawning ever so close to the deadline for nominations, as well as the date, of our Annual General Meeting for the McKenzie Park Men’s Club. We really need more people to put their hands up, without a Committee, we don’t really have a Club!

Start having those conversations with your mates during Tuesday & Thursday Social, as well as on Saturday and Sunday during our Intraclub and Interclub events!

We need you! We need all hands on deck to get a team together to make our 2024/2025 year one of our best!

The Ladies team in Division 3 has secured yet another win coming in strong over Tweed Heads. Another W to add to their record, it seems the Ladies are at their strongest this year with a very hardy team. This coming week they will aim to take out the Mudgeeraba side, also coming off two wins in the first two rounds.

Will be excellent to see the ladies get 3 consecutive wins to open their season and they will no doubt have to fight the hard fight with a very imposing Mudgee team looking to also create the same outcome to the week.

Division 5 – GREEN got a little shell shocked at Helensvale. Succumbing to the carpet and a tenacious Helensvale team. Going down on all three rinks and getting sent a spicey welcome package with an overall score of 42-83.

There wasn’t much our Ladies & Gents could do on the day and it all went Helensvales way as our 5’s took one of their biggest losses to date. No doubt they are back to the drawing board and will come out super pumped against Tweed this weekend.

Some minor changes will see the teams boosted a bit with the return of Colleen Willis and Narelle Foster which will hopefully give them the morale needed to put the punish on.

Some team changes after Round 1 meant Div 6 was going into Round 2 a fair bit stronger. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overrule Beenleigh who only narrowly took out the masterboard 61-54.

Div 6 did manage to win on two rinks, but a heavy leak on the third rink meant Beenleigh took the overall shot tally as well as the much needed win points.

This coming week we welcome the return of Dean Hall. Rod Brown also comes into the fray. These two leads should provide some good bowls to support their teams and they will definitely be on song for their opponent Tweed Heads when they road trip down to NSW to play at Club Tweed.

The indisputable, uncontestable, irrefutable game of the week goes to Division 7 – Orange!

Almost this exact time last year, Division 7 battled Woongoolba and got an absolute shellacking 99-28 in one of the biggest cricket scores I have ever seen one of our teams take.

They were very aware of this coming into the Round 2 match up against Woongoolba, who hadn’t really made many changes to their team since last year.

It was a bitter fight all day long and it was always going to go down to the wire. McKenzie Park Div 7 ORANGE really put it to the people with their never say die attitude. Eventuating the win with two rink wins and one loss, and an overall score of 65-64, an impressive turn around from last years result and a massive confidence booster for the team going into this weeks match against another fierce foe in Tugun.

It’s time for the Semi Finals in the Men’s Handicap Pairs for 2024! But before we get there this Sunday 21st at 12:30PM, there had to be some winners and losers in the QTR Finals.

It was very much a case of Master meets Student in Game 1. Club Coach John McMahon went against one of his proteges in Neil Agar. Neil was accompanied by yet another one of Johns disciples, John Catlow.

John McMahon himself brought a third understudy out of the camp with newcomer Greg Beckett.

This was the particular game of interest we mentioned earlier, not only was the Coach flocked by his entourage of young Padawans, but this is the first competition Greg Beckett has been in – encouraged by John to give it a go, and so far has tasted some great success!

It was Master & Commander John McMahon & Greg Beckett who took out the match, beating Neil Agar & John Catlow 27-24.

Larry Bowdler & Paul Krekelberg couldn’t hold off Chris Davidson & Shane Stevenson, going down 25-10. Chris & Shane making their appearance known to the rest of the field.

Pete Macaulay & Wolfgang Dickmann continued their trot. Overpowering Scott Swan & Kyle Asquith 21-17 and also letting the other contenders know they are a team to look out for.

Father & Son duo Marty & Josh White got their first run on the green for the tournament and notched up the shots to send Rob Crewdson & Maurice McCallum packing 26-19.

It’s the business end of the competition now with the Semi Finals this Sunday. Two really entertaining games on the way so get down and give the players some support!

This will be a good weekend to catch some lawn bowls. On Saturday, whether your headed down to Tweed Heads with our Division 5 & 6 Pennant Teams, or just going to relax at McKenzie Park with Division 7 and then the Handicap Pairs Semi Finals on Sunday.

All teams will be firing on all cylinders across the board, so expect to see some great bowls played all weekend long!

Good luck everyone and have fun!
