We are off and racing for Pennant 2023 and there looks to be a few teams with a very good chance of bringing home the flag this year!
Division 5 Green maintained their spot as our prominent players from McKenzie Park with a battle against the always tough Broadbeach at Broadbeach. The Div 5’s showed them a thing or two, earning themselves the maximum point tally of 16 overall with a nice margin in shots to go with it.
There are many different types of preparations for sports in general. People eat certain things, wear certain clothes and perform tiny rituals that satisfies their superstitions. But one thing we learnt about one of our Division 5 players, and something rather opposite of the normal Grippo on the bowls before they get to the green, was a ritual done by David McCann. If you have ever wondered why David is able to slip his bowls into tight heads with a lovely draw, it comes down to this;
A magician would never normally reveal their tricks, but it was very interesting to see David apply Ella Bache Cocoa Butter to his hands before the big game! Whatever works! And it definitely seemed to on Saturday!
Division 6 Gold took a trip down to Tugun who are always a worthy adversary. Unfortunately just missing out overall by 3 shots but managing to win a rink for two points. This will be another team to watch as they haven’t made many changes from their Q7 lineup which brought them home the cheddar.
Division 7 Orange strolled down to Southport where it was almost snowing and blowing icy winds from the way of the ocean. Just scraping through by 1 shot overall, but getting a very respectable two rink wins for a total of 14 points.
Division 7 Purple was unfortunately plagued with members away either through holidays or illness, and it showed on the green when they were toppled by Woongoolba. With most of their away players back this week, it will be good for them against Mermaid this weekend.
We have added the Pennant Results page for this years competition: https://mckenziepark.com.au/results-2/pennant-2023/
The Fixtures for Round 2 have been confirmed even though the original draw was only provisional. https://mckenziepark.com.au/fixtures/ There may be some changes to the draws in our divisions in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on the Fixtures page as well as the main board in the club for any changes. We will also let you know on Facebook.
Handicap Singles are underway with all sectional games being completed and knockout rounds now starting. Fixtures for these are up.
Handicap Pairs draw has been released and we will add this to the site closer to the starting date.
Champion of Champions Fours at Robina rolled on Sunday. Our most certainly formidable team with a combined age of almost 300 years took on Paradise Point! Thanks to the Gold Coast Tweed District Bowls Association, they have allowed us to provide you with two videos of McKenzie Park VS Paradise Point. There was some sort of problem during the live stream which meant the video was split into two parts.
Take a look at them below, but don’t read the last paragraph because it is a spoiler!
In a phenomenal display, the McKenzie Park team of Peter Dymock, Russel Taylor, Ray Collins & Clint Sheldon overcame Paradise Point in the last end to snatch the win 17-16 and get themselves into the 3rd Round against Benowa. Massive congratulations!!!!!! The stream was a pleasure to watch and it was a nail biting finish! Super good luck next week team!
Good luck to everyone playing this weekend and enjoy your bowls and have fun!
