Week 18 Wrap Up 2024

I apologise for what is about to come in this Week 18 Wrap Up. Last week was a little slow with just a couple of games being played in the Men’s Championship Triples, but to give the wrap up and an insight into what we need to make happen with haste, there is a heap coming up and we need to address this sooner, rather than later! So buckle up, I will do my best to get it all in.

The last of the McKenzie Park Major Championships (I class it as one, this discipline needs some more love from all residing bodies within Lawn Bowls here in Australia)! – my opinion.

But this is the last of the common Championships before we move onto Handicaps, Mixed and incentive based events.

Round 1 was played on Sunday, with 2 matches scheduled to play due to Byes to make up the draw, with a third game getting in early because one of the most important days of the year is coming this Sunday the 12th – Mothers’ Day.

Two amazingly close games between the teams playing in Round 1 – John Benigno, Shane Stevenson & Chris Davidson VS Wayne Hansen, Steve Pollock & Greg Lucas went literally down to the last end. And by the last end, both teams were tied, a rarity hardly seen which meant an extra end had to be played where Wayne Hansen, Steve Pollock & Greg Lucas managed to secure two shots to move themselves into Round 2.

The second game between Graeme Geary, Tony Price & John McMahon VS Kyle Asquith, Ray Collins & Clint Sheldon also went down to the last end. The team of Kyle Asquith, Ray Collins & Clint Sheldon just narrowly winning by one shot and keeping their Triples hopes alive.

Because it will be Mothers’ Day this coming Sunday the 12th, games for Round 2 are not expected to be played, but can be played during the week, or from what I have been told by the Games Director – Peter Horne, on or before 19th of May.

The third game played can be seen in the Draw, but we won’t comment on that or have it on our Results page until the rest of Round 2 has played their games.

Our True Club Champion exclusive to McKenzie Park – where the Ladies Singles Champion – Colleen Willis plays against the Men’s Singles Champion – Kyle Asquith is set for Saturday 1st of June. It’s going to be a colossal outing when we get to see these two Champions face off!

Then a few days later on the 5th of June, we have the Arm & Palm Day which falls on a Wednesday and gives contestants an opportunity to win more in a day than most of us earn in a week! Pennant 2024 is still open for expressions of interest. There is already a heap of names, but we always need more! Starting on the 6th of July until 25th of August, we would love to bring home some more flags for our cabinet. So take a look on the board outside the Bowls Office and get your name on there!

Handicap Singles & Pairs nominations are awaiting your arrival!

Singles nominations close 26th May with Round 1 starting on 2nd of June.

Pairs nominations close 23rd June with Round 1 starting on 7th July.

These are two extremely fun comps run by the Men’s Club. Our Selectors have worked tirelessly to set our handicaps to put our entire membership on the same skill level to provide an equal playing field. Get your names onto these two sheets outside the Bowls Office, they are a great reason to get on the grass and roll a few.
