GREENS UPDATE

It’s that time of the year when the greens are frantically getting pulled out at every Club around the GC. There was some juggling done at McKenzie Park with the starting time for various reasons, but everything is well under way now.

Turns out the timing was almost perfect with the weather that we have had. It also helped a metric tonne that extensive work had been completed on the grass in previous years, which means this year it has been pulled out and will be back back in a shorter time frame then usual.

Our Greens Director David McCann gives us the low down on what to expect in the coming month…

This year our grass green is looking promising to be fully functional in about two weeks. We are still dependent on some weather factors that could either help or hinder progress, but the outlook for opening is favorable for around about a fortnight give or take.

The carpet demolition and resurfacing will commence on the 28th of October and will take about four weeks which means we will then have two brand new greens for Christmas time.

I would like to thank those who volunteered to help with the grass green preparation; the Greenkeepers of cause - Jackie McWhinney Shillington, Greame & Dean Shillington who brought some outside help along. Serena and Michael Tindel, Larry Bowdler, Greg Lucas, Bob Chessor and Paul Stanton. Special thanks to Max Tindel for keeping everyone honest and making sure we didn't work overtime and to Serena for purchasing and cooking up a great little feed for the workers!

So it really isn’t long now until the current carpet is on it’s way to the tip and the grass is ready for some feet! Will be great for the Summer Nines teams once the grass is back in action and Christmas time should be a blast with both greens operational.

SUMMER NINES

The Summer Nines campaign for 2024 didn’t get off to a fairytale start. Instead, both teams returned home with a loss and good insight on the caliber of teams they can expect to face for the rest of the season.

There was quite a few last minute pull outs and a couple of position changes, as well as some shakey weather, but it was a fairly decent outcome although the ladder shows us with two losses.

The first couple of games are good to assimilate into new teams and positions and there are always some nervous jitters to get past until McKenzie Park gets on the grind and starts to bring home some consistent wins.

Both White & Orange will take quite a bit from Round 1, although not losing by a lot, both teams did suffer in the dying stages and hand the game to their opponents. With all the players back for Round 2 and both games at home, it will be a good week to roll into the motions for the foreseeable future.

SUMMER NINES

The teams remain pretty much the same as they were originally meant to be. The Managers & Reserves will be updated during the week so make sure to check the board when you tick your name off to see if the Selectors have updated it! We will put the final teams up Friday afternoon just in case there are any other changes, so keep an eye on Facebook.

Good luck everyone this week! Have fun!
